I am delighted to share that on January 1, 2014, this prestigious seat of higher learning claiming international repute will turn 150-years. Government College, Lahore opened its eye in the Haveli (palace) of Dhian Singh in the Walled City on January 1, 1864. The present gothic-style majestic building of the GC University Lahore was completed in 1877 on 3700 square feet with a cost of Rs. 320,000/-. Government College, Lahore was raised to the status of University in 2002 and was renamed as the GC University Lahore.
In a rapidly changing environment, GC University Lahore is clear about its objectives and intentions. GCU is an international institution that embraces the ideal of the research university where the union of teaching and research, combined in a search for impartial truth is fundamental. This oldest seat of quality education has produced hundreds of literary figures, politicians, two Nobel Laureates, jurists, sportsmen, nuclear scientists, government officials, army officers, scholars, architects, actors, musicians, poets, writers, journalists and many other history making personalities in all disciplines of life. The people of Pakistan, educationists, Ravians, students, faculty members should feel pride of this University's leading role in promoting quality education and research.
We are entering a new phase of the University. We will celebrate our sesquicentennial anniversary, our wonderful traditions and our very exciting future-throughout the 2013-2014 academic year and we invite you to be a part of these celebrations. We intend to call on alumni to recall their memories associated with this grand institution boosting splendid traditions on the eve of 150 year festivities. We hope that students, faculty members, alumni and others alike will celebrate this outstanding achievement, which has enabled both individuals and the country to grow.
